Gossamer Dreams - ‘Love’.

One year ago, I was plunged into the world of Gossamer Dreams - a collaboration of work-at-home Mums (WAHMs) who stock an online store once a month. I felt blessed to join these warm-hearted women, and have since embarked on an amazing journey of friendship and creative exploration.

Gossamer Dreams is an opportunity for us to break away from our WAHM business, and make whatever we are passionate about at that moment. It is an escape, a chance to be whimsical and push our artistic boundaries.

Over the year, my enthusiasm has only grown. I still love seeing everyone else’s interpretation of the monthly theme, I still get an adrenaline rush when our products go live and I love reading the comments on our Facebook page. The excitement and support of our customers is the fuel that motivates us
each month.

The theme for our stocking this Monday is ‘Love’ – and we’ll be sharing our favourite fabrics, patterns and techniques. We have a huge compliment of guest WAHMs join us for our first anniversary, showcasing an amazing array of talent.

Over summer I lived in a bunch of a+ Skirts, from Make it Perfect. As much as I loved my summer skirts, they just won't stand up to a Melbourne winter, so it was time to make a new batch.

Due to the heavy fabric I've used for colder weather (and not being a tall person) I have brought the 'A' shape in a little. As you can see, I'm addicted to this pattern - its fantastically versatile. I have just used the basic version, however there are other options and embellishments including pockets, lace and buttons.

Finally the size 3 testers are ready! (Remind me to never plan sewing projects again in the school holidays!)

I'm on the search for reliable and honest testers! The tester jeans are ready to post, and the testing period will run for 2 weeks after they're received. Although testers are full length jeans, they are made with light weight denim (considering we're in the height of summer!)

- Which size clothing your child is mainly wearing at the moment.

The Marieke Skirts ... and Gossamer Dreams

When I found out our Gossamer Dreams theme was 'Eden', no fabric better summed it up than Kristen Doran's 'Peacock Garden', which features sprawling flowers, and beautifully detailed peacocks (pictured above). I wanted to show it off as best I could, and after lots of scribbling and experimenting, I came up with the Marieke Skirt. It is fully lined, and made from the softest and lightest denim you'll ever find. The decorative panel extends the full width of the front panel, and when the wearer moves, you can see more of the fabric.

Now Gossamer Dreams is done and dusted for another month, I thought I'd include some full-sized pics of a couple of the Tigernaut Jeans offerings. Its time to put away the bats and the spiders, and wait patiently for the cute and pretty fabric to arrive for next month's stocking!

While GD went live on Friday night, I was at the Smashing Pumpkins concert at Festival Hall. Fittingly, their last song was called Gossamer :) The rest of the crowd had mixed feelings about their newer material (as did I) but when the older songs came on, the crowd hit the roof. There are no words to explain how incredible it is to be only metres away from a band who have had such a profound effect on your life (and to share that experience with thousands of people who feel the same). Billy Corgan, you're one sublime genius!

Coming up this Friday at Gossamer Dreams we have bats, fairytales and fairies, skulls, ghosts, witches and spiders!

Phantasmagoria is the theme , and I thought I'd quote Lesley's description on the Gossamer Dreams blog to explain:

I almost forgot to post these pics - they're my latest adventures in breaking away from denim (as much as I still love it!) The above pic is 'Midnight Forest' on a Helmut Lang pinstripe, and below is 'Red Lightning' on Houndstooth Plaid (from Gossamer Dreams).

Using different fabrics has been a huge source of inspiration - there will definitely be more experimentation! And if you have a fabric that you'd love to see - feel free to let me know!

Possum Pouches Charity Auction

Yikes ... this is a bit belated, but I thought I'd post a pic of my contribution to the first Possum Pouches charity auction. Its a summer-weight Tiger Two jeans set perfect for Spring:

The first Possum Pouches charity auctions were in aid of Jeans for Genes/Children's Medical Research Institute, and raised a fantastic $535. Be sure to check out the next auctions running from the 1st to the 30th September, in aid of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, which work towards keeping children safe from violence.

Taking stock

When I was home at the weekend, Mum and I went through a box of my beloved late Nan's sewing items (both my Nan, and Great Nanna were avid sewers).

Some of the items were exactly the same as I use (Gutermann threads, bias tape makers, etc), but we also found some gorgeous treasures (pictured above). We found wooden thread spools, old metal snaps, hooks and loops and loads and loads of buttons! She'd also saved all the zips she'd taken out of items of clothing - incredibly thrifty! We even found a scrap of fabric and buttons from my old primary school uniforms that she used to sew for us.

Its amazing how much easier sewing is for me that it would have been for my Grandmothers - I have a fully computerized sewing machine, sewing stores galore within a 10km radius, and the internet! I can buy any fabric imaginable, chat, network and collaborate with other sewers, and even have my own webstore! :P

I would have loved it if they could have had even a tiny peep at all of this!

Our BeetleKissRoar Collaboration!

I've been hugely fortunate to join 2 of the most warm hearted and talented WAHMs around - Lesley from Cherub's Kiss, and Mel from Beetlebums for our first BeetleKissRoar collaboration!

Lesley's gorgeous Auriel has alternating minky and denim panels, with an apple, apple core, and tiny caterpillar on the front. On the back is a divine fluffy minky caterpillar, and the inner is lime minky.

From Mel, there is a funky Inside Out with a fruit panel on the front, and an appliqued caterpillar on the back, munching his way through a leaf. The inner is hand-dyed in beautiful greens and blues.

*Sigh!* How I wish my little one wasn't nearly toilet trained! These nappies are incredible.

The Tigernaut Jeans set consists of a size 2 pair of denim jeans and top, with fruit on the cuffs and pockets, and a cheeky caterpillar creeping around the side of the left leg. These are the new 'Tiger Two' jeans, which have a cuff featuring two different fabrics, different inside and out.

These items are currently up for auction here on Lesley's site. What a lucky bub the owner of these goodies will be! :D

Something different

I thought it was about time to post a photo of something other than jeans!

Last month I participated in the Contemporary Handmade Alliance (CHA) craft swap, and decided to indulge my bag making fetish! I decided to make the Amy Butler Birdie Sling, as I'm a huge fan of bags that look fantastic as well as being able to fit the kitchen sink! (And I was desperately hoping my swap partner felt the same!!) I also love this bag as it fits nicely into your body, and you're not continually shifting it back onto your shoulder as you walk.

Take 1 - I made this one as a test to make sure it was going to work well: (Can you tell I'm obsessing over Amy Butler and Erin McMorris fabric at the moment? :D)

... and take 2, the final product for my swap partner. I used Riley Blake's Retro Umbrellas in Pink as well as Amy Butler's Green Martini for this one.

Happily, it turned out my swap partner is also a fan of a good sized bag, and emailed me to let me know it will be perfect for an upcoming getaway! I'm glad you like it Caitlin!

Well, I have been a super-slack blogger of late, but I'm back into the swing of things now!

March was simply huge! Firstly DH and I saw our first live music gig since the birth of DS1 4.5 years ago! I've sworn I will do it again soon - I'd forgotten what an incredible experience it is. We saw the Pixies at Festival Hall. They were absolutely sublime - if you have the chance to see them on their Australian tour - do it if you can. I'm besotted all over again - every CD in the house is playing the Pixies! (Above is a pic of the funky bags they were selling).

Secondly it was the month of the Great Down Under Nappy Hunt (GDUNH). I had a lot of fun sewing madly to get as many outfits out as possible! Here are a couple of my favourites:

It's such an honour to be featured by one of my favourite fabric stores - thank you so much Shona! I have some very cool retro fabrics on the way soon from Funky Fabrix for our winter stocking - I can't wait to see them in the flesh.

Jeans fans needed for testing!

Happy new year everyone!

*ETA: All testing spots are full now - thank you so much everyone for your interest!*

I'm currently looking for some little cloth wearers to help test sizes 1 and 2! I have slightly altered a feature of size 1, and some of the tots helping with earlier testing of size 2 have toilet trained :)

The jeans are ready to be posted, and the testing period will be from receipt until the 7th of February '10. Due to it being summer, very light and soft summer denim has been used for your bub's comfort.

Testers need to be full time (daytime) cloth nappy wearers - and preferably not too close to toilet training! Both boys and girls are welcome - but I would prefer size 1 testers to be around the 11/12kg mark, and size 2 testers to be around the 13/14kg mark.

If you're interested in participating, please email me your child's age (in months) and weight to tigernautjeans @ gmail.com (without the 2 spaces).

Of course, testing is totally free - all I need is your thorough and candid feedback! :D

... and I'd love to extend a ginormous 'thank-you' to all the wonderful people who have supported Tigernaut Jeans since we opened at the beginning of September. Its been an absolute blast - I'm very lucky to be surrounded by such a lovely bunch of people! :D

A huge thank you in particular to the Charity Auction's winning bidder, SusanKP, who helped us raise a whopping $197 for Movember - thank you again for your generous support. Thanks to all of those who bid to help us support such a great cause.

Since finishing the last stocking and the Christmas pre-orders, I've been sewing up a storm for my two little men for summer - I now have a huge pile of shorts and summer PJs! These are my favs - some PJ Pants for the T-Man (who is now a big 2 years old!)

I've also managed to squeeze out some Christmas gifts for some gorgeous baby girls who have arrived this year. Two teeny Reversible Pinafores, using Bettsy Kingston's pattern - nice and simple (just what my fried brain needs this time of year!)

Pffft! My computer is up to its normal hijinx, and has decided the last photo looks better on its side! (You get the idea though!)

I would love to wish everybody a fantastic festive season and happy New Year - I hope everyone gets a chance to have a bit of much deserved R & R.

The fabric cuts featured in the competition were sent to be tie dyed by Miranda at Funky Tie-Dye, then turned into pockets for our stocking next week! The shorts will come with matching tie-dyed t-shirts - so cute, and very funky! I was totally blown away by the colours when I opened the package! Thanks Miranda :)

I thought I'd take a pic of the pockets I've been making over the last couple of days. I'm slowly adjusting to ironing in 35 degree heat!

I've spent today sewing half of them onto shorts for our next stocking in roughly 2 weeks! I hope to have around 12 outfits ready, as well as 1 outfit for a very exciting charity auction!

Hmmm ... what could these be?

I have a 3-pack of fluffy red sherpa wipes to give away! (They're a remnant, and the fluffiest sherpa I've ever seen!) Just a couple of customs I've finished up today :)

This set is ready for a swap with an awesome WAHM :) The pockets and cuffs feature Alexander Henry's Canyon Flutter Pink - a gorgeous new fabric that almost looks like it has been hand painted in parts.

And these are for a little man on his way up! The pockets feature (of course!) Echino Scooters Aqua.

We've been hearing news in Melbourne of rain in other parts of the country (particularly Tassie), and now we're seeing some of our own. After so many years of drought, its blissful to hear rain on the roof again - lets hope there's lots more to come. This is a photo of the gorgeous Cherry Plum tree in our backyard.

The kids and I are slowly adjusting to rainy days inside - something I've rarely encountered in my (almost) four years of being a parent. Off to the library for a stack of new books today!

I have two random listings almost ready to go up, featuring my favourite fabric designer - Etsuko Furuya. I'm just waiting on t-shirts to arrive so I can make them into sets :)

I can assure you there will be lots more Etsuko Furuya coming up - his imagery and colours are so striking and beautiful - its hard not to be swept up in his designs. They lend themselves perfectly to children's clothing - particularly denim.

Well, the September nappy hunt is done and dusted! Congratulations to all hunters - I'm in awe of your patience! Best of luck with the prize draws :)

Congratulations also to berniebabe, who won our first Tigernaut Jeans lottery - she will receive a free pair of jeans featuring Jennifer Moore’s funky Monaluna Metro Market Apples print. Thanks to all who entered - I definitely have more lotteries planned for the future.

On the sewing front, I've just finished my first custom pair of pink cord Tigernaut Jeans! As much as I love my denim, it was such a delight to sew with such bright colours.

Summer is here!

A bit of a belated post, but the start of our summer stock is up! Its been a lot of fun making these shorts with some great summery prints - I can't wait until the warm weather starts in earnest.

Next week I'll be putting up some semi-custom pre-orders, so you can make the most of your Nappy Hunters discount before September ends!

I've been finalizing fabric selections for our summer sets, and thought I'd post a couple of sneak peaks! I can promise you that these shorts look great over baby leggings - my youngest has been relying on these to keep his legs warm while modeling for me in our freezing Melbourne Spring! Our shorts (unless otherwise specified) are made from a butter-soft 100% cotton denim - cool and breathable - perfect for warm weather!

And ... last but not least ... pink cord! (Thanks to the suggestion of two Nappy Addicts :)) I pounded the pavement between Melbourne's fabric warehouses on Saturday only to be told I'd never find pink cord this season! Well - pink cord drought or not, I managed to find some on my last stop for the day! Its 100% cotton and gorgeous - a beautiful bright, vibrant colour. I also picked up some deep purple and baby blue - I'm looking forward to getting it washed and sewn up :)

I think I'd like a pair of these!

Registration is now underway for The Great Cloth Nappy Hunt!

In short, nappy hunters have one month (from September 1st) to find the Diaper Decision icon hidden in each of the 150 Cloth Nappy Hunt sponsor sites. Its a lot of fun, very addictive, a great way to learn about modern cloth nappies, and other fantastic WAHP-made products.

Our new labels arrived a couple of weeks ago, so I've been having fun testing where to put them on our jeans. I think this will be my final decision! I started snapping pics of our little one playing in the backyard, but the rain would not co-operate, so it was a quick photo shoot! :)
